COMMENTS: The drama film “Do You Want Me To Kiss You This Time” is a black and white Spanish film with English subtitles. The film is about the mental deterioration of Nerea, a lonely 12-year old girl after struggling post-traumatic stress from being sexually abused by an older man which affects her psychological well-being. The film explores extremely complex, mature, negative psychological themes of a distressed and depressed troubled young soul struggling with the unpleasant experience of being raped; the desperation and loneliness of a scared girl having no one to talk to feeling threatened and unprotected due to the absence of a parent; the devastation and post-traumatic stress the teenager experiences after losing her virginity through being raped by an older man; a male pedophile grooming, exploiting and having sex with a 12 year old girl; being tormented by a painful experience resulting in madness, disturbing behavior, violent imaginations and eventual suicide; and sexual violence in the form of rape. Due to the extreme complexity and maturity of themes, they not only likely to prematurely expose children to distressing adult content, but the themes of a pedophile raping an under-age girl and depictions of the trauma she undergoes is also upsetting, disturbing, distressing and likely to result in emotional and psychological harm. The film is inappropriate for teenagers who are developing their sexual identity and highly susceptible to influences by the media influencing sexuality and sexual behavior. Scenes of Nerea’s strange behavior such as that of her licking her own menstrual blood is also disturbing for viewers and inappropriate for children who would be distressed and upset. Themes of pedophilia and an adult male justifying having sex and raping her, while grooming, courting and placating her, is also very likely to cause moral harm to children. Deviant sexual behavior as depicted in this film and a grown man finding sexual gratification by sleeping with a young girl, sexualizes her as she is shown in her underwear, which may also cause desensitization to this deviant behavior, further contributing to moral harm. The film mainly focusses on the negative aspects such as the impact of sexual abuse to the child, without giving any form of positive resolution at the end with the perpetrator not showing remorse and the child resorting to suicide out of desperation. The film does not communicate any form of hope to young victims to which they can revert in similar situations, with the phone number given at the end supposedly being one for an overseas helpline. The fact that Nerea goes to the man in the final scene and his assertions that she is enjoying it, and positive feedback that she is a brave woman for having sex with him, may also reinforce the erroneous arguments of pedophiles that children ask for sex and encourage harmful behavior and fantasies. Judged within context, the graphic depictions of rape and sexual violence, could not be justified as having strong dramatic or artistic merit, or being of public interest due to an absence of strong positive resolutions diminishing artistic and dramatic merit and public interest. The material therefore attracts an XX rating as per chapter 4 section 18 (3)(b)(ii)(iii)(iv) of the Films and Publications Act.
